Brazil men’s football team continue their quest for Olympics Gold Medal when they meet Germany in the finals on Saturday evening.

Brazil got into the final last year as well at the London Olympics 2012, but lost to Mexico despite fielding a very strong squad. This is a competition where they were not crowned as champions yet. They have to satisfy with the Silver medal on each of the previous three occasions they got this far – on 2012, 1998 and 1994. This time they will be desperate to end this drought.

The Selecao are unbeaten in the tournament so far. But their start was rather unconvincing with two goal-less draws against Iraq and South Africa in the first two group games. Needing a win in the final group game to qualify for the knock-outs they swept aside Denmark by 4 goals to nil. Then a 2-0 win against a rather strong Colombian in the quarter finals and huge win 6-0 against Honduras in the semi-finals confirmed their berth into the finals at the event in front of their home crowd.

For the Germans, this is their first appearance into the men’s football event at the Olympics since winning the bronze medal at Seoul 1998. They were also Bronze medal winners at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. And this is the first time they are reaching this far as the finals in 10 appearances.

Just like the Brazilians, the Mannschaft have made a turbulent start at the competition after surrendering points with 2-2 draw against Mexico and 3-3 draw against Mexico. However their final group was against an easy opposition Fiji, whom they thrashed 10-0. Once they reached the knockouts, they looked rather convincing starting off with the 4-0 mauling of Portugal in the quarter finals. The semifinal tie against Nigeria was supposed to a tough one, but they eased past the African giants with a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Brazil vs Germany: Head-to-Head

It was Brazil who eliminated West Germany in the 1998 Seoul Olympics Semi Final with a 3-2 win in the extra time. Brazil then lost the finals against Soviet Union 2-1, while Germany defeated Italy 3-0 to win the bronze.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, they were drawn in the same group and Brazil clinch the match by a single goal.

In 1952 at Helsinki they met in the quarter finals, Germany went on to win the 4-2 in the added extra time. They were defeated by Yugoslavia in the semi-finals and finished fourth.

Brazil vs Germany: Prediction

This is a clash between two sides who had never won a gold medal at the Olympics. Brazil had made into the finals on three previous occasions and lost in each of them. But this is the first ever appearance for the Germans in an Olympics final.

However the host nation is not yet fully recovered from the embarrassing 7-1 defeat inflicted by Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final hosted in Brazil. They will be desperate for a revenge, but moreover they will want to break the jinx in the finals.

A cracking match is expected on Saturday and I expect plenty of goal bound action at both ends. Brazil haven’t conceded a goal in the tournament, but this is where it breaks. And on the back of home support I hope they will eventually have their revenge, but only by a small margin.

Full Time Score Prediction Brazil 3-2 Germany.
