This goalless friendly at San Siro was the first meeting since the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, which the Azzurri lost in a sudden death penalty shoot-out.

“There was no desire for revenge, as the games were very, very different. We wanted to prove ourselves and played on a par with a very strong side.

“I am satisfied, I consider this a good game and above all a good attitude,” De Rossi told Rai Sport.

“The Coach has to decide based on those who put their heads fully into this new adventure, so not based on age, but on the right mentality and attitude.”

Giampiero Ventura has asked for the Serie A season to start earlier so Italy can be better prepared for the showdown with Spain on September 2.

“Ahead of that game, it would be very important to have a few more minutes in our legs,” confessed the Roma midfielder.

“But football now is about money and the teams in August will probably be flying around the world to play friendlies and raise funds, so I doubt they’ll be able to reach an agreement.”
