Bayern demonstrated they are on a winning run, turning in a strong display and beating Mainz 3-1 on Saturday. Hansi Flick’s men achieved a comfortable lead and were in control in their sixth consecutive Bundesliga victory. “I was delighted about the first 30 minutes,” declared the Bayern coach. Bayern engaged cruise control then and sealed a comfortable victory. “We ran down the clock after the break,” analysed Flick. “We were focused until the end and did our job,” added sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić.

Reaction to Mainz v Bayern
Hasan Salihamidžić: “Mainz are very dangerous when it comes to set pieces. They have quick players up front, so we had to be alert all the time. So we’re satisfied, we were focused until the end and did our job, so that’s good.”

Hansi Flick: “I’m glad about the sixth win in a row. I was delighted about the first 30 minutes. We didn’t do enough then, our pace dropped. I wish my team had acted differently following the corner shortly before the break. We ran down the clock after the break. We must admit those 60 minutes were not like Bayern. Mainz have their qualities in attack and demonstrated it a number of times today. We defended well and took three points.”

David Alaba: “There’s still a long way to go. We want to take each game as it comes and win them. We want to be at the top in the end of course.”

Achim Beierlorzer (Mainz 05 coach): “We set out to invest everything in this match, to play as a unit, to be there for one another and run hard. We achieved that. At the end of the day it wasn’t enough, which was by and large down to Bayern’s individual quality.”

Ridle Baku (Mainz 05): “Taken altogether we turned in a good performance. We didn’t run up the white flag. Many people had thought Bayern would win anyway, and by a big margin, but we put up a fight.”
