Sergio Aguero will be keen to find out Manchester City’s first 2019/20 opponents when the fixtures for the new season are released at 09:00 BST Thursday 13 June.

That’s because two Premier League records will be up for grabs for the striker on the opening weekend of 10 August.
And history suggests Aguero has the ability to break them.

Fast-starting Aguero
Although Aguero did not score in Man City’s opening match of last season, a 2-0 win at Arsenal, he loves a fast start.

The 31-year-old scored twice on his very first PL appearance, as a substitute, in a Matchweek 1 victory over Swansea City in August 2011.

He followed that up with strikes against Newcastle United in both 2013 and 2014, before getting on the scoresheet against Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

It means he is just two goals behind the record jointly held by Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney for most goals ever scored in Matchweek 1.

But Aguero might hope for even more than two goals in the opening match of City’s title defence.

Indeed, if he scores three times he will also surpass the PL’s all-time leading goalscorer, Shearer, for most hat-tricks scored in the competition’s history.

Aguero scored three hat-tricks in 2018/19 to take his tally to 11 and equal the record held by Shearer.

One of the Argentinian’s trebles came early last season, too, when he struck three times against Huddersfield Town in Matchweek 2.
But scoring a hat-trick in the first match round of a season has proved an elusive achievement.

Only seven players in PL history have done so, and none of them feature among the top 20 goalscorers of all-time.
