His cross gave Mauro Icardi the equaliser after a Stephan Lichtsteiner opener, then Ivan Perisic snatched the win.

“It was the perfect performance and that’s how you need to play against Juve,” Candreva told Sky Sport Italia.

“This has to be the starting point that we can build on, as in three days we’ve got another game and so far we’ve taken the wrong approach to the smaller clubs.

“We won’t set limitations on our season. We’ll see where we are at the end.”

Inter looked like a completely different team to the one that lost 2-0 to Hapoel Beer-Sheva on Thursday.

“It’s a psychological issue. I repeat, when we face less prestigious clubs, we need to have the exact same attitude as we did tonight. We must always play with this focus and humility.

“From the match with Empoli we will discover what kind of a team we are. From tomorrow we’ll start preparing for that match in Tuscany to find some consistency.”

There had been reports suggesting Frank de Boer would be sacked if he lost the Derby d’Italia.

“Results weren’t coming, but we always worked hard,” continued Candreva.

“It takes time, he was coming from a different League and doesn’t speak Italian. Let’s start from here and see if we can go far.”
