Sergio Ramos turns 34 on Monday, and his current contract with Real Madrid is due to expire in June 2021,

and with it clear that he is heading into the final years of his career at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, it’s worth asking whether the Coronavirus crisis will impact his renewal.

It had been previous expected that he would sign a new contract with preliminary negotiations having already taken place, although the club was quick to make clear that there was no apparent rush to get the matter sorted. However,

the COVID-19 crisis which has enveloped much of the globe has changed the footballing landscape, and this includes contract renewals.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Ramos last renewal happened in 2016 without much fanfare, with the time period coinciding with some very strong rumours that he would join Manchester United.

Ramos has always expressed his desire to retire with Los Blancos, and any such battle over his upcoming renewal won’t be over salary, but rather the length of the contract.Although exceptions have been made in the past, Los Merengues generally don’t offer players over the age of 30 years old more than a one-year extension as a rule.

By 2021, Ramos will be 35 and although he wants to sign an extension which runs beyond 2022, Real Madrid have to assess the situation. He is currently a regular starter in the senior team and his physical condition is perfect, yet the COVID-19 crisis has thrown everything up in the air.

The economic situation of all clubs will change for the worse, and this may impact Los Blancos’ decision on Ramos.
