MILAN – Disappointment simply has to be the overriding feeling after a match in which Inter saw three points slip through their grasp in the 89th minute. Stefan de Vrij told DAZN and Inter TV about how down he felt to draw the game, but also how proud he was of the team.

“We’re so disappointed about the result. We were so close to victory, but we’re pleased with our performance. We played our game. We’d worked so hard in the week on our defensive marking in particular, as we’d let teams have too many counter-attacks against us in recent fixtures. We did better in that regard and gave very little away. That’s what’s disappointing because when you’re ahead in the 80th minute, you have to see it through.”

The key point towards the end was a penalty awarded by Maurizio Mariani. “I was pretty close to the incident and I didn’t think there was anything in it, but the referee went to the VAR screen and gave it.
“We’re now focused on Empoli. It’s key for us to win.”
