It looked like nothing could stop Liverpool from finally being crowned champions again after they amassed a whopping 25-point lead over reigning champions and nearest challengers Manchester City.
A first top-flight title in 30 years was just two wins away with nine matches remaining – but then came the coronavirus pandemic, with the Premier League season and other competitions across Europe suspended indefinitely.
June 12 is the new target for the action to resume under the Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ plan – but with the UK still in lockdown pending a further announcement from the Government later this week, it is not yet known whether that date will be feasible.
Concerns have also been expressed over players’ safety, with many fearing they and their families could be exposed to infection from the potentially deadly virus if they are rushed back into playing matches too soon.
Some pundits have called for the season to be scrapped – but Liverpool striker Origi said that would be agonising for everyone connected with the Reds.
However, the 25-year-old said safety of players and the public had to be the top priority, whatever decision is made.
UEFA have stipulated that domestic leagues can decide on final positions based on “sporting merit” if all fixtures cannot be completed.
But with players not even back in training yet, Origi admitted that he and his teammates are in the dark about how events are going to unfold.
