Chievo vs AC Milan
2016/17 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 16 October 2016
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Verona).

The Flying Donkeys truly have been flying this season. After seven games, Chievo – a team who are usually just happy with securing 40 points and automatic safety – are currently in fifth spot. They’re only behind Roma and Lazio based on goal difference, and were the season to end now, they would be featuring in the Europa League.

Chievo’s next opponent, AC Milan, are desperate to return to the Champions League. The Rossoneri have not featured in even the Europa League in the past three seasons – a shocking reality for a team who are only second to Real Madrid in terms of Champions League titles won. They also have been through the proverbial managerial merry-go-round; since January 2014, there have been six coaches, including current boss Vincenzo Montella to sit on the bench.

However, there have been signs of promise since the former Fiorentina and Sampdoria boss took over, and the visitors will be hoping to count on their long-standing unbeaten record against Chievo. They haven’t lost to the Flying Donkeys in nearly 11 years and will be looking to make sure that does not change this weekend.

Milan shipped six goals in their first two games, but appear to have stemmed the bleeding as they have conceded just four in their next five. Since being crushed 4-2 by Napoli in their first road game, they have managed shut-outs in their next two and are in a good position to potentially do the same on Sunday.

Chievo’s home record, however, is quite formidable, and the Flying Donkeys truly are a tough customer to deal with at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi. Fiorentina and Inter have struggled so far this season, as has Sassuolo, and they are hoping that their project will start to pay dividends this season.

Chievo vs AC Milan: Prediction

Chievo and Milan come into this game tied on points. The Flying Donkeys, however, historically have not fared well in this fixture. Out of their last 28 meetings, they have won just twice, whilst drawing six and losing 20. As noted, the Rossoneri are unbeaten in their last 19 ties against the Flying Donkeys, and only failed to win on three occasions. However, don’t ignore Chievo’s strong home record and their tendency to be a much better side on home turf, plus the fact that their last three meetings here finished as draws.

A stalemate is highly likely, but don’t expect one with goals flying in at either end, especially given Chievo’s ultra-defensive and sturdy approach. A low-scoring affair appears to be on the cards as the two sides will split the points.
