Gareth Bale grabbed a point for Madrid in the Clásico with a fine effort from the edge of the area, but Zinédine Zidane was left sweating over the fitness of Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal forward went off at half-time with an ankle sprain. Ronaldo had earlier drawn Madrid level at 1-1 following Luis Suárez’s opener.

Barcelona were reduced to ten men close to the interval when Sergi Roberto was dismissed following a clash with Marcelo, but they still managed to take the lead for a second time through Lionel Messi. Although Bale responded, the Spanish champions remain unbeaten in the Liga with two games remaining.

Liverpool’s fine week concluded with defeat at Stamford Bridge as Jürgen Klopp’s side missed the chance to guarantee a berth in the UEFA Champions League group stage next season. Olivier Giroud made the difference for Chelsea, heading in from a Victor Moses cross after 32 minutes.

The Reds fielded a strong side in west London but were unable to respond, with Mohamed Salah remaining on 43 goals for the season as he aims to catch Ian Rush’s club record of 47. Third-placed Liverpool now lie three points clear of Chelsea, in fifth, but boast a vastly superior goal difference with one league fixture remaining.
