In what was an extremely disappointing display across the 90 minutes, the Reds were also reduced to 10 men as Paul Pogba was shown a straight red card following a challenge with Liverpool midfielder, Naby Keita.

Speaking to MUTV’s Stewart Gardner following the defeat, the United skipper began: ‘’First and foremost, apologies to the fans, we need to be better and it’s not good enough.

’They deserve more and when we’re coming off the pitch 5-0 down against our rivals, with the Stretford End still singing, we obviously appreciate that but, deep down within ourselves, we know we’ve got to do much more,’’ added the United defender.
The damage was largely done within the first 45 minutes for Maguire and his side, as Liverpool raced into a 4-0 half-time lead with Mohamed Salah (2), Naby Keita and Diogo Jota netting in front of the Stretford End before the Egypt forward added his third and his side’s fifth, five minutes into the second half.

The result leaves United seventh in the table, with the Reds’ next outing a trip to the capital to face Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday as Maguire insists it is a question of responding to this setback.

‘’I think, mentally for the lads, it will hurt,” he added. “These are the big games that you come to the club to be a part of and to play in, so obviously it’s going to hurt. I think everyone needs to take a look at themselves in the mirror.
