The 2015/16 Champions League winner Real Madrid take on Europa League winner Sevilla for the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday night at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway.

Each of these two teams are making their fifth appearance in a Super Cup final. This is also the fourth final in which two Spanish sides are competing for the trophy. The previous three being 2006, 2014 and 2015.

Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 in the 2014 final at Cardiff, aided by two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sevilla, who won three consecutive Europa League trophies become the first team to appear in three UEFA Super Cup finals in a row. They were Super Cup champions in 2006, beating Barcelona 3-0. Their other three finals were in 2015 against Barcelona, 2014 against Real Madrid and 2007 against AC Milan.

Real Madrid won the Super Cup two times, in 2014 beating Sevilla and 2002 defeating Feyenoord 3-1. The Los Blancos lost in the other two finals – in 1998 against Chelsea 1-0 and in 2000 against Galatasaray 2-1.

Zidane will be looking to start his first full season as Real Madrid head-coach with a silverware. He was a Madrid players when they won UEFA Super Cup against Feyenoord in 2002.

The Spanish giants will be without the services of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is out with the injury he picked up in the Euro 2016 final against France.

Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Pepe are likely to miss with fitness issues.

Real Madrid: Predicted Line-up (4-3-3)

Casilla – Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal – Casemiro, Modric, Kovacic – Isco, Rodriguez, Morata.

Sevilla: Team News

The Super Cup final will be the first competitive match for Jorge Sampaoli as the head-coach of Sevilla.

The Rojiblancos lost three of their most influential players in the Europa League winning campaign – Ever Banega (Inter Milan), Grzegorz Krychowiak (PSG) and Kevin Gameiro (Atletico Madrid).

They were one of the most active teams in the summer transfer windown adding at least eight new players to their squad. The two Atletico Madrid loanees Matias Kranevitter and Luciano Vietto, Sampdoria midfielder Joaquin Correa, Japanese playmaker Hiroshi Kiyotake and former Toulouse forward Wissam Ben Yedder will be all eyeing for their competitive debuts on Tuesday.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla: Prediction

Sevilla had a busy pre-season as they were involved in about 6 friendly games and won in all of them. So fitness won’t be an issue for them, but they have a new coach and plenty of new players. Their performance relay on how these players gel together and play as a team. Also Sevilla’s recent record against Real is nothing to write about.

Real Madrid had a difficult summer with their player Ronaldo yet to recover from the injury he picked up at the Euro 2016. The fitness of Bale and Benzema are both under question and are expected to miss, while Pepe and Kroos are yet to train with the first team. Real Madrid played just three friendlies, lost to PSG while won against Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Looking from outside there are no clear favourites for the UEFA Super Cup 2016 final. The sides go in with equal chance of lifting the trophy for the above mentioned reasons. I believe Real might edge this, based on their superior record over Sevilla.

Tips:

  1. Both Teams to Score.
  2. Double Chance: Real Madrid/Draw.
  3. Sergio Ramos to Score First (Risky).
