t’s almost like the old days: Bayern’s wingers mesmerising the fans, the number 10 on the right and the number 7 on the left. At the start of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, however, it was not Arjen Robben and Franck Riberý wreaking havoc on opponents Schalke, but Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry. Both shone with three-goal involvements in the game. For Serge Gnabry it was his first Bundesliga hat-trick, with two of his goals assisted by his new team-mate. Sané himself, who played his last Bundesliga match for Friday’s opponents Schalke 04 some 1,588 days ago, also got off the mark. But to start with he was still missing that goal-scoring touch in the final third.

Speeding to his first goal

With his tremendous speed, Sané made life difficult for Schalke’s defence.

With just under 20 minutes left to play, the time finally came for the new Bayern player and he was able to celebrate his first goal in the red and white of Bayern (71). Joshua Kimmich’s through-ball found the marauding Sané, who raced past his opponents before beating Schalke keeper Ralf Fährmann one-on-one, making it seven for Bayern.

Sané’s perfect finish sent Bayern into seventh heaven.

Even more is possible
Sané enjoyed a perfect competitive debut for FC Bayern against the club of his youth. But Sané thinks he’s not yet at 100 percent. “I want to go full throttle of course. I always want to give input and help the team play and win,” the highly motivated new signing said after the final whistle. Hansi Flick gave the Germany international a well-earned rest after 71 minutes and was very pleased: “He got off to a good start. It was nice he was ready and integrated well right from the off.”
