Should Real Madrid win on Saturday, Raphaël Varane and Karim Benzema would be the sixth and seventh Frenchmen to have picked up two European Cup winners’ medals, after Raymond Kopa (1957, 1958 & 1959), Marcel Desailly (1993 & 1994), Didier Deschamps (1993 & 96), Christian Karembeu (1998 and 2000) and Éric Abidal (2009 and 2011). Both won the trophy for the first time two years ago, beating Atlético in Lisbon.
Real Madrid’s Raphaël Varane and Atlético Antoine Griezmann will be the last two players to join up with the France squad for UEFA EURO 2016, with the bulk of Les Bleus already gathering together. Didier Deschamps’s charges will gather together to watch UEFA Champions League the final, most likely at their Clairefontaine training base, three days before their last-but-one friendly on 30 May, against Cameroon in Nantes.
