Luis Suárez is expected to travel to the United States to join up with Uruguay for the Copa América, though he is likely to miss the start of the tournament because of a hamstring injury.

Barcelona said tests on Monday confirmed that Suárez sustained the injury in the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla on Sunday. The club said the striker will begin his rehabilitation in Barcelona before joining the Uruguay squad on 1 June in the United States, where “he’ll continue with the second phase of his recovery.”

Suárez was in tears after being substituted in the 56th minute of Barcelona’s 2-0 extra time win over Sevilla. He later said on Twitter that he hoped the injury was “nothing so I can be with my national team next week.”

The striker got hurt while stretching for a cross in the second half. He tried to continue after putting his hand on the back of his leg, but eventually dropped to the ground requesting medical assistance. Suárez slowly walked off the field and was shown crying on the bench while being comforted by his team-mates.
