Belgium international Dries Mertens seems set to extend with Napoli and sign a deal worth €4m a year plus bonuses.

The fans in Naples begged the attacker to remain at the San Paolo and to judge by the reports in Italian media, they seem to have convinced the 33-year-old Inter target.

Multiple reports in Italy claims Mertens has agreed to sign a new contract with the Partenopei and SportMediaset claims it’s a two-year deal worth €4m a year plus €500,000 in bonuses for the joint all-time leading goalscorer.

The Azzurri are allegedly preparing the documents to tie the Belgian to the club until June 2022 and give him a sign-on-fee of €2.5m.

President Aurelio De Laurentiis, who yesterday gave Mertens one week to sign the deal or move on to pastures new, has shown his tenacity to keep one of the club’s key members and avoid facing him when travelling to Milan next season.

Inter, who had offered Mertens a move to San Siro, have now been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan’s contract expires in June and the former Napoli forward can move on a free transfer in the upcoming window.
