The Villarreal head coach underlined that the team is ready to fight for a title against a Manchester United team who go into the match as favourites

Villarreal head coach Unai Emery appeared in front of the media to analyse the upcoming UEFA Europa League final this Wednesday, where the Yellows will face Manchester United (9pm CEST).

“We’re proud and we want to take one more step”

“This is a credible and recognisable project. It’s a stable project, which has had great moments. It’s designed to do important things. The club has broken through barriers in recent years. This season, we’ve broken through the semi-final ceiling. We’re proud, but we are responsible and want to take a step forward. We want to win the competition.”

“We’ve earned the right to take on the big teams”

“It’s a tough competition. There are very big teams. Villarreal have earned a spot among them. It’s been very deserved. We want to be at our best, through our quality, showing our playing style.”

“We have arguments for competing against Manchester United”

“Ten months ago we were speaking about the Europa League and Manchester United were the favourites. We’re just candidates. We saw ourselves as able to be among the best teams, and we’ve done that. We’re real candidates to fight for the title, but they are favourites. They have great players and a lot of history. We have arguments to find our chances of winning the cup.”

“We need to show personality”

“We need to take the game to where we want it, to show our character. We need to be superior in some stages of the game and adjust our individual and collective qualities so the other team doesn’t shine.”

“Being the favourite is only important in the build-up”

“All finals are different. Sometimes you’re favourite, and others you aren’t. Being favourite is only important in the build-up. During the match, the form you’re in and the chances you get during the game is what is important.”

“We’re a trusty team and we will fight to win the final”

“We’ve been a trusty team, with good solutions. They can feel like they are favourites, with the opportunity to beat anyone, but we have chances to win the final.”

“Defending this project is a responsibility I am proud to have”

“I feel proud to defend Villarreal, and obliged to as well. To defend the whole club. To defend this project, which is very big. From that responsibility, I want to enjoy this project and defend Villarreal in the final.”
