England meets European Champions debutants Iceland in the final round of 16 clash of the 2016 edition at the Allianz Riviera in Nice.

The pre-tournament favourites England were less than impressing in the group stage and eventually finished second behind Wales in Group B. They were held to draws by Russia and Slovakia and their only positive in the tournament is a second half performed against Wales that earned them a 2-1 win.

Iceland are making their first ever appearance in a major tournament. Their ‘never give-up’ attitude was evident in the 2-1 win against Austria as they scored the winner in the dying seconds of the injury time. With two draws and one win, they finished second in the group pushing Portugal behind them.

England Team News:

Hodgson is expected to recall Tottenham wingbacks Kyle Walker and Danny Rose into the starting line-up after resting them in the final group game against Slovakia.

Rooney is also expected to start in midfield, while Daniel Sturridge is likely to drop to bench in favor of Harry Kane.

The Three Lions have no known fitness issues or players missing through suspension and Hodgson has the luxury of fielding the strongest possible eleven on Monday night.

England: Predicted Line-up (4-3-3)

Hart – Walker, Cahill, Smalling, Rose – Dier, Wilshere, Rooney – Lallana, Kane, Vardy.

Iceland: Team News

Iceland have no major injury concerns or players missing through injury. The team coach by the duo Lars Lagerback & Heimir Hallgrimsson is likely to start with the same line-up that earned their team a 2-1 win in the final group game against Austria.

Iceland: Predicted line-up (4-4-2):

Halldorsson – Saevarsson, Arnason, R.Sigurdsson, Skulason – Gudmundsson, Bjarnasson, G. Sigurdsson, Bjarnason – Sigthorsson, Bodvarsson.

England vs Iceland: Head-to-Head Stats

The teams haven’t met in recent years and the last time they played against each other was in a friendly at Manchester on June 2004. Wayne Rooney and Darius Vassel scored two goals each in England’s 6-1 victory, with Frank Lampard and Wayne Bridge contributing one each.

England vs Iceland: Predictions

As Alan Shearer mentioned, no teams will be scared of playing England in the knockout stages. So I believe Iceland will fancy their chances and this is going to a tough outing for Rooney and company. They will set deep and defend looking for opportunities to launch counter attacks. They also pose ample threat from set piece situations.

England must raise their game, if they are to progress to the quarter finals. They were extremely poor in creating clean cut chances and there is every chance for this match to end in a draw at the end of full 90 minutes. Iceland had scored at least a goal in each of their previous 9 matches, so I expect both teams to score a goal in this tie.

England will eventually get their win, but Iceland wont give up that easily and this has the prospect of a cracker of a match on Monday night.

Exact Score Prediction: England 2-1 Iceland.
