It is the club where Luis Suarez made his professional debut and whose stadium hosted the first ever World Cup fixture. We lift the lid on the team that will take on Celta as part of LaLiga World.

  • The club was founded in 1899 after Uruguay Athletic Club and Montevideo Football Club merged, creating Latin America’s first creole team in the process.
  • After its inception, the club’s strip took inspiration from the flag of Artigas, one of Uruguay’s national symbols, in the shape of a red shirt and blue shorts. However, given that the red shirt faded quickly and no better quality alternative was available, a white shirt and blue shorts were adopted three years later, and have remained ever since.
  • Club Nacional de Football have clinched the Uruguayan league championship 45 times as well as a plethora of international competitions, including a joint-record three Intercontinental Cups.
  • It is the club where FC Barcelona’s Luis Suarez made his professional debut and several well-known players who have plied their trade in LaLiga have also enjoyed successful spells, such as Julio Cesar Dely Valdes, Ruben Sosa, Victor Esparrago and Sebastian Abreu.
  • The team plays its home fixtures at Gran Parque Central, the stadium that hosted the very first match in World Cup history back in 1930 and where RC Celta will take on the Uruguayan giants. The ground was reopened in 2005, after undergoing a makeover.
