And the winner is: Germany! Having previously held the tournament in 1988, Germany will host the European Championship for the second time in 2024. The decision was announced at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Thursday, with the German Football Association (DFB) beating the rival bid from Turkey.
“We’re delighted to be able to stage the European Championship,” said Philipp Lahm after the announcement. “We have great stadia and fans who love football. We want to have a huge celebration together in Germany.” The long-serving Bayern captain was the leading ambassador for the German bid and will now lead the preparations for the tournament as head of the organising committee.
Munich’s Allianz Arena will be a central venue for the tournament. Before that, Bayern’s stadium will be hosting four matches during the cross-continent 2020 European Championship, which is taking place across 12 countries. Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig, Cologne, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Frankfurt have also already been confirmed as host cities.
