Bernardo Silva was happy to leave Old Trafford with a 3-1 win but believes City could have put the tie to bed in the first-half.
With the champions at their rampant best and United on the ropes, there were a couple of guilt-edged chances that went begging when City were 3-0 up, but the Portuguese – brilliant throughout – says he was happy with the victory.
“The first 45 minutes was very good and we could have gone into half time winning four or 5-0 because we missed a few chances,” said Bernardo.
“The second half was very hard for us – they started pressing higher and tried to control the game and we tired towards the end, but yeah, I think overall it was a good performance.”
With Bernardo used to playing on the right flank for much of his time at City, he admitted he enjoyed the more central position against United and the opportunities it presented.
Bernardo scored a wonderful opener on 16 minutes and then threaded the pass that led to Riyad Mahrez doubling the lead.
“I enjoyed the role because we won and particularly because it worked,” he said.
“Pep wanted more men in the middle and that’s why he put me there and happily things went our way.
“It’s never easy to come here against one of the best sides in England and Europe and win 3-1 but we did it.
“We were disappointed to lose against United last month because it is not normal for us to lose at home and I hope this makes up for it to our fans.”
Kyle Walker, also impressive for the 90 minutes, concurred with Bernardo’s view of the game, adding: “The first half was great – they came out fighting in the second half and changed their system as they had to because they were 3-0 down in the Manchester derby, but fair play to us, we got the result we needed and now it’s back to the Etihad.”
