The Slovakian international signed a new contract with the Partenopei this month, having made over 400 appearances for the club since joining from Napoli.

“I feel at ease at Napoli and to play at a club like this is an honour for me,” Hamsik told Hertha Berlin’s official website, ahead of a friendly against the German side.

“Napoli is a part of me, it’s my family. I have a very good relationship with the President [Aurelio De Laurentiis] and the Coach [Maurizio Sarri]. Naples is a very passionate city and I love it.

“I’m also very proud to have found my way into the hearts of the fans.

“Gonzalo Higuain? They loved him in Naples, so it’s no wonder our fans are annoyed after he joined a rival team in Juventus.

“I respect his decision, but when we meet I’ll try and beat him.

“We want to have a great season and do our best in every competition. The Italian League is very difficult to win, and the Champions League is the biggest club competition in the world.

“It won’t be easy, but at the same time it’s very exciting.”

Hamsik also had words of praise for Hertha, ahead of Sunday’s match.

“For us it’s a very important test ahead of the start of the season. Hertha Berlin aren’t an easy opponent, they finished seventh last season and it’ll be difficult to beat them.

“We’re expecting a spectacular game.”
