The young Portuguese star was linked with all of Europe’s elite clubs. His comments regarding following in his hero Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps led everyone to believe a move to Manchester United or Real Madrid was inevitable.
While either of those moves may still happen in the future, he opted for a 100 million-plus Euro deal to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.
Speaking Benfica TV, he insists the move was the right one for him to progress and develop.
He said:
“It is a dream for any player to be able to play in one of the best teams in the world.”
“Atletico is one of them.”
“I had several clubs chasing me but I ended up choosing Atletico because it was the one I liked the most.”
“I think it will give me the best conditions to progress in my career. We work very well together and that is positive.”
