“Three goals are always good. Thank God he did that today,” said coach Hansi Flick after the final whistle, delighted with his attacker, whose goal tally now stands at 31 this season. This is not only the best tally in Bundesliga history after 24 games, but would also have been enough to secure the top goal scorer trophy in 52 of the 57 Bundesliga seasons. Gerd Müller’s all-time record of 40 goals from the 1971/72 season is no longer looking impenetrable.
“For Lewy, it’s important that the team is successful. And if the record falls alongside that it’s all the nicer. But the team is the priority,” Flick stressed, underlining Lewandowski’s qualities as a team player. The numbers prove the FCB coach right: The 32-year-old was once again the key to Bayern’s attack. He fired nine shots at goal, more than twice as many as the visitors managed in total (four).
