German winger using omission from 2018 FIFA World Cup as extra motivation for the season

One of the stars of the Premier League last season could be about to get even better in 2018/19.

Leroy Sane was one of only five players to reach double figures for both goals and assists in 2017/18, scoring 10 times and setting up 15 as he helped Manchester City to the PL title.

But the 22-year-old says he has a point to prove after he was left out of Germany’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Sane has revealed that a long conversation with Pep Guardiola has made him more determined than ever to show what he is capable of.

“It was [a shock when I heard the news],” he told Man City’s official website. “I was disappointed at the time and it was really hard for the first week.

“Pep Guardiola had a chat with me after it happened. We talked about everything and how my mind was. Now, we are just looking forward.

“It’s just made me want to come back really strong. It gives you motivation.”

Sane, who scored in the pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Wednesday, will hope for a first chance to catch the eye when Man City begin their title defence at Arsenal on 12 August.
