The German Football League (DFL) published a statement on Thursday following its extraordinary general meeting on German football’s next steps in relation to the coronavirus pandemic. Among the points covered is the decision to access the solidarity fund that has been provided by the four German teams involved in the Champions League, including FC Bayern.
This will see a total of €7.5 million go to clubs in the 3. Liga and Women’s Bundesliga. The distribution ensures in detail that every club in the third tier receives a payment – except those whose first team plays in the Bundesliga. This only applies to Bayern. Furthermore, every Women’s Bundesliga club will receive a payment of the same amount, again excluding the clubs whose men’s teams play in the Bundesliga.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern chairman, gave his response: “I strongly welcome the decision of the DFL executive committee to distribute the solidarity fund. I think this decision is shaped by great sensitivity and solidarity. With this distribution decision, the four Champions League participants are making an important contribution to solidarity in football during this difficult period.”
