Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio warns suspending Serie A again if COVID-19 cases continue to rise would be ‘worse than apocalyptic’ for the sport.
There are currently 26 players in Serie A who are positive for Coronavirus, including 17 at Genoa and four at Inter.
The disciplinary commission is yet to give its verdict on Napoli, who could be punished with a 3-0 defeat plus a one-point penalty for not attending their game with Juventus, as there’s a debate over whether the local ASL health authority should’ve over-ruled the existing Serie A protocol.
“There is a protocol that was approved by all the authorities and is valid for various different situations,” Tavecchio told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“As far as I know, there was also an agreement between the clubs that they would continue to play, even if the squads were significantly reduced by cases.
“The local authorities therefore have to come into line with or at least work with the central authority of the State. If Serie A were to be suspended again, it’d be worse than apocalyptic for the sport in this country.”
There has been an upturn in COVID-19 cases in Italy over the last few weeks, with 3,376 new cases in 24 hours and 22 deaths.
However, that is also significantly less of a spike than we’ve seen in other countries moving into a second wave, for example the UK, Spain and Germany.
