Gonzalo Villar put on an impressive performance for his team and was instrumental in Roma maintaining control for the majority of the game, helping the Giallorossi build from the back as well as breaking up Cagliari’s attacking play.

“I’m very happy with the defensive aspect of my game today, I recovered a lot of balls and this helped the team, so I’m happy for that,” the Spaniard told Roma TV.

“It was an important win for us, on account of our last match [against Atalanta]. We had some pressure on us, and we wanted to get back on the right path. I think we played a good game all around.”

The Spaniard’s calmness on the ball and ability to play under pressure were demonstrated once more in his role as defensive midfielder behind teammate Jordan Veretout, and Villar praised his teammates for immediately getting back to winning ways.

“I think we did what was needed to win today, we suffered a bit because of the penalty I conceded but we brought home the three points and that was the most important,” he said.

Villar admitted he is also growing to like his new role in front of defence.

“When I play with Jordan maybe he’s a little more advanced and I sit back, and I like this position,” he said.

“I have to help the team with winning the ball back and recovering the second balls as well. I like this role a lot.”
