Bayer Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt Preview
Bayer Leverkusen has continued to struggle in the middle of the German top flight table with four winless performances in their last five outings. The team is currently ninth in the 18-team standings, nine points below Hertha Berlin and the final Europa League qualifying berth for next season.
Bayer is coming off an embarrassing 0-1 defeat at the hands of bottom three squad Hamburger SV on the road at the Imtech Arena last Friday for their second straight loss, as per Fox Sports.
Head coach Roger Schmidt’s own on-loan player, Greek defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, netted the lone goal of the match for Hamburg in the 76th minute to hand a Javier Hernandez-less side their ninth loss of the season.
Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt has won three of their last four games to stay in the third spot of the league table, one point ahead of perennial contenders Borussia Dortmund and seven points behind second-running team RB Leipzig.
Frankfurt blanked cellar-dwelling team SV Darmstadt, 2-0, in their most recent Bundesliga fixture held at their home ground of Commerzbank Arena last Sunday, Channel News Asia reported.
After a goalless first half of play, Japanese midfielder Makoto Hasebe broke the game’s deadlock with a successful penalty kick in the 74th off a foul by Darmstadt defender Alexander Milosevic.
Croatia international Ante Rebic then doubled the lead with a close-range left-footer in the 83rd minute to seal the win for head coach Niko Kovač’s side.
It was the second straight win for Frankfurt after their defeat to Leipzig three rounds ago.
